Why Linen Works in Hot Weather (and How to Wear It)

Why linen keeps you cool in the heat, and how to choose and wear a linen dress or set on the hottest days.

Is linen good for hot weather? Yes. Linen is one of the most comfortable fabrics to wear in the heat because it is breathable, absorbs moisture and dries quickly, and its natural crispness keeps it from clinging to the skin. Here is why it works, and how to wear it on the hottest days.

Why does linen keep you cool?

  • It breathes. Linen is woven from flax fibres, and the weave lets air move through the fabric so heat can escape.
  • It handles moisture well. Linen absorbs moisture and releases it quickly, so it feels dry rather than damp.
  • It stands away from the body. Linen is naturally crisp, so it skims the skin instead of sticking to it.
  • It is a natural fibre. Unlike many synthetics, it does not trap heat against the skin.

Is linen better than cotton in the heat?

Both are good warm-weather choices. Linen generally dries faster and holds its shape away from the body, which many people find cooler in humid conditions. Cotton is softer and creases less. For structure with ease, we also work in cotton twill, as in the BEIGE COTTON-TWILL DRESS.

How should you wear linen in hot weather?

  1. Choose a relaxed silhouette. Flowing cuts let air circulate. Try the WHITE DRAPED SET, a 100% linen kimono top with wide-leg trousers.
  2. Go lighter in colour for daytime. White and cream reflect more sunlight, as in the LONG DRESS IN LIGHTWEIGHT CREAM LINEN.
  3. Save dark and bold shades for evening. Once the sun is down, the BLACK LINEN DRESS or RED LINEN DRESS stay just as breathable.
  4. Keep layers minimal. A single well-cut linen piece needs little else: flat sandals, one piece of jewellery, a structured bag.
  5. Accept the creases. Soft creasing is part of linen's character and reads as relaxed rather than untidy.

Can you wear linen to a formal summer event?

Yes. Structured linen, such as the CORSETED WHITE LINEN DRESS, works for summer weddings and resort dinners. See our wedding guest guide for more.
